Sussex Police Authority -
Managing Performance
The Police Authority strives to continually improve the service provided by Sussex Police by carefully monitoring its performance in both terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Key policing objectives and targets are set for the Police by both the Home Secretary and the Police Authority following consultation with local people. These are outlined in the annual Local Policing Plan, which also sets out how the Authority intends to secure 'best value' for the people and communities in Sussex by reviewing the functions of the police and setting performance improvement plans for those functions.
In practice we work to achieve this through:
- Agreeing the performance that we expect from the Force with the Chief Constable, and setting down that performance in the annual Local Policing Plan (Best Value Performance Plan.)
- Monitoring the Force's performance against the targets agreed in the Local Policing Plan, giving credit where due, and investigating further where performance has not met expectations.
- Working with the Force in support of our overall plans for making Sussex safer to review all aspects of the local policing services provided by the force over a five year period; challenging current practice, consulting service users, comparing performance and ensuring that our services are competitive.
- Working in partnership with Sussex Police to explore the best ways of policing the local area.
The Authority must publish findings of each review and any actions to improve
services together with measures and targets in an annual Best Value Performance
Plan which forms part of the aunnual Local Police Plan. The full version
of the plan is available at police stations throughout Sussex and at your
local library. In addition the Best Value Performance Plan can be downloaded
as part of the Annual Policing Plan from the Publications Menu. Copies of
all Best Value Review reports can be obtained from John Godfrey, Clerk to
the Police Authority, Sussex Police Authority, County Hall, Lewes, East
Sussex. BN7 1SW.
Her
Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) also has a role to play
in monitoring the work of the Force on behalf of the Home Secretary. The
Authority and the Inspectorate work closely together to ensure that necessary
improvements highlighted by the Inspectorate are addressed by the Force.
