Geoffrey Theobald OBE
Councillor Member
Geoffrey Theobald returned for his fourth term of office with the Authority in June 2007, having originally been appointed in 1972.
He has lived in Brighton and Hove all of his life and was educated locally at Brighton, Hove and Sussex Grammar School and then the College of Estate Management, London, now part of the University of Reading. He is married to Carol, currently the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, and they have two daughters and two sons.
Geoffrey was himself Mayor of Brighton in 1982-83 and Leader of East Sussex County Council from 1989-1993, continuing as Leader of the Conservative Opposition Groups on the County Council and then Brighton and Hove City Council until 2001 when he fought the General Election for the Brighton Kemptown Constituency. He is Chairman of Brighton and Hove's Environment Committee and nationally, is a member of the Strategy & Finance Policy Review Group and the Improvement Board of the Local Government Association and of the Conservative Group Executive on the LGA. He is also a member of the Boards of the Gangmasters Licensing Authority and PASS, the Proof of Age Standards Scheme.
He was senior partner of a leading firm of chartered surveyors and retired in 1989 to concentrate on his work in local government. Since 1992 he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of LACORS (Local Authorities Co-ordinators of Regulatory Services). LACORS' mission is to guide, support and improve the delivery, co-ordination and consistency of local authority regulatory services.
In 1985 he was elected to represent Patcham Ward which includes Patcham and Hollingbury.
He is also a member of East Sussex Fire Authority, the Local Government Association Rural Commission and of the Executive of the South Downs Joint Committee, which involves councils from Winchester to Eastbourne.
Geoffrey's other interests include most sports; he is a life member of
Sussex County Cricket Club, a member of the MCC and a vice-president of
Brighton & Hove Cricket Club. He enjoys gardening and travel.
